Why Daily Activity Can Be the Best Fat Burner

If one of my clients wanted my single best weight loss tip, I would have to say that you should never underestimate power of activity. Activity, you see, is a deceptively effective fat burner. The way I explain this to clients is to compare a week of gym workouts to a week of activity.

Let's say you hit the gym four times a week and run for an hour on the treadmill each session. You burned about 2400 calories. Not bad, right? But let's look at what a few easy, everyday activities can do.

  • Make an effort to walk everywhere (suppose additional 4000 steps/day): 200 calories/day
  • Take the stairs instead of elevator: 50 calories/day
  • Get a standing desk and stand for half the day instead of sitting all day: 200 calories/day
  • Play some active sport 1 hour, twice per week: 500 calories/day

Adding everything up, you're burning 4,150 calories per week, or 73% more calories then when you drag your butt to the gym! Believe it or not, you would lose more than a pound of body weight each week if you were to do all this. And the most important thing to note is that none of these activities involve the gym!
